After nearly six decades of trading, a beloved tool shop is closing its doors, leaving its owners with a mix of emotions. David and Maureen Hunt, who have operated the establishment on Knowl Hill in Maidenhead, Berkshire, since 1967, expressed having the “fondest memories” of their time in business.
David Hunt, now 80, had a long history in the tool trade, having previously sold tools from a caravan at his father’s garden centre in Holyport. Over its 60-year tenure, the shop served a diverse clientele, supplying tools to tradespeople and DIY enthusiasts alike, and also retailing industrial machinery.
Reflecting on the decision to close, David stated it was the “right time to retire.” He fondly recalled the shop fostering a “community atmosphere similar to a pub,” a place where people gathered not just for tools but for conversation. “I have fond memories of running this place and I shall miss the people immensely who were all characters,” he remarked. “We’ve had our ups and downs. It’s been a long time and a steady job but things change over the years.”
David acknowledged that the rise of online retail had impacted the shop’s trade in recent years. Despite this, he felt it was time to step back. “I’ve done 15 more years than the average person and it’s time to relax and enjoy life now,” he said, citing “the economy and old age” as factors in his decision. He particularly cherished the social aspect of the shop, thanking his “local and loyal customers.” “It’s quite a social little place, you get a load of characters turning up,” he added, noting that some customers would visit daily just to chat.
Maureen Hunt described the closure as “bittersweet.” She shared heartwarming memories of their time running the shop, including “raising our children and watching them run and play down the aisles.” “It is sad to say goodbye, but we will take away the fondest of memories,” she concluded.
