Iranian Female Footballers Express Gratitude to Australia for Safe Haven

Iranian Female Footballers Find Safe Haven and Hope in Australia

Two Iranian women’s football players, Fatemeh Pasandideh and Atefeh Ramezanisadeh, have publicly expressed their profound gratitude to the Australian government for providing them with a “safe haven.” The athletes shared their hopes of resuming their professional sporting careers after focusing on rebuilding their lives in their new home.

In their first public statement since receiving humanitarian visas, the players highlighted the compassion and support they have experienced, which has instilled in them hope for a future where they can live and compete securely. “We wish to express our deepest gratitude to the Australian government, and particularly Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke, for granting us humanitarian protection and a safe haven in this beautiful country,” they stated.

Australia initially extended humanitarian visas to six players and one support staff member from the Iranian squad. This occurred after their Asian Cup campaign in Australia commenced amidst regional tensions. While five members of the group later chose to return home, Pasandideh and Ramezanisadeh remained in Australia.

The duo has already begun training with the A-League Women’s team Brisbane Roar last month, taking a significant step towards their aspirations. They emphasized, “At this stage, our primary focus is on our safety, our health and beginning the process of rebuilding our lives. We are elite athletes, and it remains our dream to continue our sporting careers here in Australia.”

Concerns regarding the safety of Iranian players had emerged after some members of the team did not sing the national anthem during an Asian Cup match, which sparked public debate. The remainder of the team returned to Iran last month following their journey from Australia.
