Robots Challenge Human Athletes in Beijing Half Marathon
Robots recently competed in a half marathon race held in Beijing on Sunday, showcasing advanced capabilities that saw the fastest machine significantly outperform its human counterparts.
The victorious robot, named Lightning, was developed by the Chinese smartphone manufacturer Honor. According to race organisers, Lightning completed the challenging course in an impressive 50 minutes and 26 seconds. This time notably surpasses the current men’s half marathon world record of 57 minutes and 20 seconds, which was set by Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo in Lisbon earlier this March.
Further details from the event revealed that approximately 40% of the participating robots operated autonomously, demonstrating sophisticated navigation and racing algorithms. The remaining robots were controlled remotely, highlighting diverse approaches to robotic athletic competition.
