Starmer Defends National Interest Stance Amidst Trump’s Criticism

Sir Keir Starmer has stated he will not be “diverted or deflected” from acting in what he considers the “best national interest,” following critical remarks made by former US President Donald Trump to the BBC.

Starmer’s Stance on National Interest

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Sir Keir reiterated his commitment to his decision not to involve the UK in the conflict concerning Iran, which reportedly began in late February. He emphasized, “I’m here to serve the British people always, to safeguard their interests and to ensure I make the right decisions for them.”

Starmer further explained, “That is why I took the decision that we would not be drawn into the conflict in Iran. That is why I took the decision we wouldn’t be drawn into the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.” He added, “That is in our best national interest. That is my duty. I will stick to it, and I’m not going to be diverted or deflected from that by what anybody else says.”

Sir Keir has repeatedly affirmed that the UK will not be drawn into a “wider war.” He has also opposed increasing North Sea oil and gas extraction, arguing that energy resilience is best built through investment in renewables.

Trump’s Criticism and Advice

Earlier, Trump spoke to the BBC about his relationship with the Prime Minister, suggesting that the UK and other allies should have offered more support to the US regarding the situation with Iran. He also commented that Starmer could only “recover” politically if he altered his stance on immigration and “opened the North Sea” for oil and gas extraction. “If he doesn’t, I don’t think he has a chance,” Trump stated.

President Trump had previously stated earlier this week that the US would not lift its blockade on Iranian ports until a deal had been reached with Iran to end the conflict. He has also previously expressed being “not happy” with the level of support offered by the UK to the US regarding the situation with Iran.

Regarding the North Sea, the former US President has repeatedly called on the UK to increase oil and gas extraction. When asked by the BBC by phone to clarify his remarks, Trump stated: “If he [Starmer] opened the North Sea and if his immigration policies became strong, which right now they’re not, he can recover, but if he doesn’t, I don’t think he has a chance.”

When questioned about the necessity of allies like the UK getting involved, Trump told the BBC: “I didn’t need them at all but they should’ve been there. I didn’t need them, obviously.” He asserted, “We’ve wiped Iran’s military out,” adding, “I didn’t need anybody.”

The Prime Minister has also faced mounting pressure over his government’s decision to appoint Lord Mandelson as UK ambassador to the US. In a post on Truth Social on Monday, Trump described Lord Mandelson as “a really bad pick” but noted that the Prime Minister had “plenty of time to recover.”

Royal Visit and US-UK Relations

Trump also suggested that next week’s state visit from King Charles and Queen Camilla could “absolutely” help repair relations with the UK. The former president described the King as a “fantastic man,” adding, “I know him well, I’ve known him for years.” He continued, “He’s a brave man, and he’s a great man. They would absolutely be a positive.”

The King and Queen are scheduled to travel to the US for a four-day visit beginning on Monday, where they will meet Trump at the White House. The King will have a private meeting with the president and is also expected to deliver an address to Congress.

After two days in Washington D.C., they will travel to New York, Virginia, and Bermuda before returning to the UK. The Foreign Office stated that the trip will mark the 250th anniversary of US independence and will celebrate a partnership of “shared prosperity, security, and history.”
