BBC Expert Challenges Trump’s Claims on Iran’s Crisis and Deal Prospects

BBC Expert Counters Trump’s Iran Claims

A BBC expert has provided a significant reality check regarding former US President Donald Trump’s assertions about Iran. Trump had claimed that the Iranian leadership was in crisis and eager for a deal to end ongoing tensions.

On Thursday, the US president stated that the regime in Tehran “is in turmoil” and expressed his desire to “make the best deal,” suggesting he “could make a deal right now.”

Expert Assessment Challenges Trump’s View

However, Lyse Doucet, the BBC’s chief international correspondent, strongly disagreed with Trump’s assessment. Speaking on Radio 4′s Today programme, Doucet emphasized, “The general assessment is very much not the one that President Trump is presenting, saying that the leadership is in turmoil [and] he’s waiting for them to have a unified position.”

Doucet elaborated that while there has always been “fierce debate within the Iranian system between those who are regarded as pragmatists and those who are regarded as the hardliners,” this internal discussion does not equate to a leadership in crisis on critical matters. She highlighted, “But at the very top, on the issues which matter, and that includes the nuclear programme, the fate of the Strait of Hormuz, there is consensus on how they want to deal with the United States, what are their red lines.”

Ceasefire Not an Indicator of Imminent Deal

Doucet also clarified that the current ceasefire, which Trump had extended earlier in the week, should not be interpreted as a sign that a deal is imminent. She noted, “Both sides are indicating that they are not in a rush to make a deal, both sides are saying that they are not going to back down.”

This situation, according to Doucet, presents “bad news for those that want a deal, and certainly bad news for everyone everywhere who are affected by this standoff.”
