New Delhi has sharply criticized “inappropriate” remarks concerning India and its citizens, which were shared by former US President Donald Trump on his Truth Social platform. Trump posted a four-page transcript featuring comments by podcaster Michael Savage. In these remarks, Savage discussed America’s birthright citizenship, **accusing individuals from India and China of misusing this privilege.**
According to the transcript, Savage stated: “A baby here becomes an instant citizen, and then they bring the entire family in from China or India or some other hellhole on the planet.”
India’s Ministry of External Affairs responded to the comments, **describing them as “uninformed, inappropriate and in poor taste,”** though refraining from directly naming Trump or Savage. The ministry emphasized that these remarks “certainly do not reflect the reality of the India-US relationship, which has long been based on mutual respect and shared interests.”
**The comments sparked significant outrage across India**, with the primary opposition Congress party labeling them “extremely insulting and anti-Indian.” The Congress party urged on X (formerly Twitter) that “Prime Minister Narendra Modi should take up this matter with the US President and register a strong objection.”
Strained India-US Relations
Trump’s controversial post emerges amidst a period of **strained relations between New Delhi and Washington**. He has previously pressured India to cease purchasing Russian oil, asserting that such transactions contribute to funding the conflict in Ukraine. However, in March, the U.S. temporarily relaxed sanctions, enabling India to acquire Russian oil stranded at sea. This move was intended to avert a crisis exacerbated by the global energy market disruptions, particularly those linked to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Furthermore, Trump initiated a tariff dispute with India, imposing **50% duties on Indian goods last year**, with 25% of this specifically as a penalty for its Russian oil purchases. Despite this, in February, these tariffs were reduced to 18% as part of an evolving trade agreement with India. **US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s upcoming visit to India next month** is viewed as a crucial effort to mend these strained diplomatic ties.
During his previous administration, Trump implemented a **strict crackdown on illegal immigration**, often making statements accusing immigrants of displacing American workers. He also targeted the H-1B visa program, which facilitates the entry of skilled foreign workers into the U.S. and is predominantly utilized by Indian nationals. While lauded for attracting global talent, critics argue the program undermines American workers.
The remarks by Michael Savage, shared by Trump, **resonate with these long-held views.** Savage claimed, without presenting evidence, “I used to be a great supporter of Indians in India until I opened my eyes up to what’s going on here. White men need not apply to jobs in the state of California. Nevermind in high tech. I don’t care what your qualifications are. You’re not getting a job at High Tech in California.” He further asserted that white individuals have no chance at these jobs because “almost all the internal mechanisms are set up to run by Indians and Chinese.”
