Falklands War veteran Simon Weston has expressed his hope that King Charles III can persuade former US President Donald Trump to reconsider his reported position regarding the UK’s claim to the Falkland Islands. Reports suggest the US might review its stance on the territory’s sovereignty.
Veteran’s Plea for Respect
Weston conveyed to BBC Newsnight that Trump’s strong reaction over the islands’ sovereignty made their sacrifice feel “slightly irrelevant.” He emphasized that the people of the Falklands and every veteran who served there deserve more respect, calling Trump’s comments “very unstatesmanlike.”
The US Position and Regional Context
A Reuters report, citing an internal Pentagon email, indicated that the US was considering options to penalize NATO allies believed to have not supported its war on Iran. The BBC News has not been able to independently verify this email. This development regarding the US position emerged just three days before King Charles and Queen Camilla’s state visit to the US.
UK and Argentine Claims
Downing Street firmly stated that the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands “rests with the UK” and that the islanders’ right to self-determination is paramount. This position was echoed by Sir Keir Starmer’s spokesman. Residents of the islands previously voted “overwhelmingly” in a 2013 referendum to remain a British Overseas Territory, with over 90% turnout.
Argentina, however, continues to claim sovereignty over the islands, which it calls Malvinas, despite the 1982 war ending with the surrender of Argentine forces. Argentina’s President Javier Milei, an ally of Trump, recently posted on social media: “The Malvinas were, are, and always will be Argentine.” Milei’s foreign affairs minister has also denounced the exploration and extraction of natural resources, including significant oil fields, around the islands.
International Neutrality and Warnings
A US State Department spokesperson, quoted by AFP, affirmed that the US position on the islands remains “one of neutrality.” The spokesperson acknowledged “conflicting claims of sovereignty between Argentina and the UK” and stated that the US recognizes “de facto United Kingdom administration” without taking sides on sovereignty claims.
Weston warned against any aggressive actions, stating, “What we don’t need is Mr Milei to raise his sleeves and believe that aggression may work because that would just cost more lives.”
