The 142-meter (465-foot) Nord luxury vessel, associated with sanctioned Russian billionaire Alexey Mordashov, journeyed from Dubai to Muscat, Oman, over the weekend. This passage marks one of the few instances of a private vessel transiting the strait in recent months.

While Alexey Mordashov, known for his close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, is not formally listed as the owner of the Nord, records from 2022 indicate its registration to a firm owned by his wife. Mordashov has been subject to Western sanctions from the UK, US, and European Union since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Despite international calls to freeze his assets, the yacht has not been seized in previous locations like Hong Kong and the Maldives. The Nord, valued at over $500 million (£370 million), departed Dubai on Friday night and reached Al Mouj, a marina in Oman’s capital, by Sunday morning, according to data from the Marine Traffic platform.

Maritime traffic through the Gulf channel has seen a reduction compared to pre-conflict levels, contributing to a sharp rise in global oil prices. The global benchmark Brent crude reached $109 (£80) a barrel on Monday. Restrictions on shipping through the vital waterway have persisted, particularly following the announcement by then-President Donald Trump regarding potential US forces imposing a blockade on Iranian ports.Amidst ongoing diplomatic challenges, Tehran has intensified its focus on strengthening its relationship with Russia. This week, Russian President Vladimir Putin hosted an Iranian delegation in St. Petersburg. Putin reportedly stated that the Iranian people were “courageously fighting” for their sovereignty against American and Israeli pressure, as reported by the Russian state-run news agency Tass. Araghchi further emphasized the “depth and strength of our strategic partnership” in a post on X, expressing gratitude for Russia’s solidarity and support for diplomacy.

The Nord superyacht is equipped with luxurious amenities, including a swimming pool, a submarine, and a helipad, as detailed in Superyacht Times magazine. Mordashov, who chairs the steel company Severstal, has an estimated net worth of approximately $37 billion (£27.3 billion), according to Forbes. It remains unconfirmed whether he was aboard the Nord during its recent transit through the Strait of Hormuz.
