Council Reverses World Cup Bank Holiday Decision Amid Cost Concerns
North Ayrshire Council has reversed its decision to grant a bank holiday for staff to celebrate Scotland’s return to the World Cup, citing significant cost concerns. The local authority had initially approved the day off, scheduled for June 15th – the day after Scotland’s opening match against Haiti – back in March.
However, three councillors subsequently challenged the decision at an audit and scrutiny committee meeting, arguing that the holiday would incur costs exceeding £1 million for the council due to lost productivity. A cabinet meeting held on Tuesday ultimately decided to accept the committee’s recommendation, leading to the abandonment of the proposed holiday plan.
Background and Council’s Stance
While the Scottish government had suggested a national holiday the day after Scotland’s 02:00 kick-off against Haiti in Boston, it left the final decision on implementation to individual councils. This tournament marks Scotland’s first World Cup appearance in 28 years.
Councillor Chloe Robertson expressed disappointment, stating, “It’s quite disappointing that the call-in has come in as health and social care staff work really hard and I think they deserved that recognition.”
Councillor Christina Larsen confirmed that the cabinet had accepted the council committee’s decision. She added, “We want to highlight how much we very much appreciate our staff. The decision to accept the recommendation is absolutely no reflection on them.”
Financial Implications and Support
Conservative Councillors Ronnie Stalker and Scott Gallacher, along with independent member Ian Murdoch, had initially presented the argument that the holiday would cost the financially pressured local authority – like all Scottish councils – over £1 million in lost productivity. This argument was supported by Tory leader Cameron Inglis and Labour member Donald Reid.
Conversely, Larsen, the council’s depute leader, and fellow SNP Councillor Shaun Macaulay had initially supported the original decision to grant the holiday.
