Iran Absent from FIFA Congress, World Cup Participation Confirmed

Iran was the sole nation not represented at FIFA’s annual congress held in Canada on Thursday, yet its participation in this summer’s World Cup remains confirmed. Gianni Infantino, president of world football’s governing body, reiterated that the country “will be participating” in the tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Entry Permission Revoked for Iranian Delegation

Iranian football federation officials, including its president Mehdi Taj, were expected to attend the FIFA congress in Vancouver. However, reports from the Iranian news agency Tasnim indicated the delegation was turned back at border control, citing treatment by Canadian immigration authorities. Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Anita Anand, confirmed her understanding of a “revocation” of the permission to enter the country.

Canadian Stance on IRGC Ties

Concerns have been raised regarding alleged ties between Mehdi Taj and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which is designated as a terrorist organization in Canada. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, when questioned on the issue, stated that IRGC members are “prohibited from coming” to Canada. While unable to comment on specific individual cases due to privacy laws, Carney highlighted that the IRGC has been listed as a terrorist organization in Canada for several years, emphasizing the effectiveness of the country’s entry hurdles.

FIFA Emphasizes Unity Amidst Geopolitical Tensions

Despite the diplomatic complexities and previous uncertainty surrounding Iran’s participation due to geopolitical tensions, Infantino affirmed: “Of course, Iran will play in the United States of America. The reason for that is simple, because we have to unite. We have to bring people together.” The Iranian football federation has not yet commented on its absence from the congress.

Canada’s Diplomatic Position

Minister Anand further clarified Canada’s diplomatic stance, stating: “On our position on Iran, it is clear from a diplomatic standpoint, we have no diplomatic relationships with Iran. We have not had diplomatic relationships with Iran for over 10 years.”

Iran’s World Cup Schedule

The World Cup is set to commence on June 11. Iran is scheduled to play New Zealand on June 15 and Belgium on June 21, both in Los Angeles, followed by a match against Egypt in Seattle on June 26. Previously, US President Donald Trump had welcomed Iran’s participation but also expressed concerns for their “own life and safety.” Iran had also petitioned for their games to be played in Mexico, but Infantino consistently maintained the country would participate as scheduled.
