Man charged with attempted murder of two Jewish men in Golders Green

A man has been charged with attempted murder after two Jewish men were stabbed in Golders Green, north London, on Wednesday.

Essa Suleiman, 45, is accused of attacking Shloime Rand, 34, and Moshe Shine, 76, and remains in custody. Both men suffered serious injuries and were treated in hospital.

Police Declare Incident a Terrorist Act

The Metropolitan Police declared the incident a terrorist incident. Officials have stated that Suleiman, born in Somalia, came to the UK lawfully as a child in the early 1990s and is now a British citizen.

Upcoming Court Appearance

He is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court later on Friday, where he will face two counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a bladed article in a public place. The Met Police also confirmed that he has been charged with attempted murder in relation to a separate incident on Wednesday in Southwark, south-east London.

Call for Public Caution

Cdr Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, has urged the public to “avoid any further speculation in relation to this case so that justice can run its course.” She added that specialist officers are continuing to provide support to the victims of Wednesday’s attacks as their recovery progresses.

UK Terror Threat Level Raised

On Thursday, the UK’s terror threat level was raised to severe following the stabbing. The government noted that the threat level has been rising “for some time,” clarifying that the increased level was “not solely” a result of this week’s incident.
