Man Receives Indefinite Hospital Order for Crossbow Attack on Friend’s Home

A man who attacked a friend’s house with a crossbow has been given an indefinite hospital order following a court hearing.

Details of the Incident

Andrew Woollen, 52, was identified as the assailant. In October 2024, he fired a number of bolts, causing significant damage by breaking the front windows of a property located on Victoria Avenue, Hull.

Legal Proceedings and Sentencing

Woollen was sentenced on Thursday after a trial of facts hearing at Hull Crown Court last year. A judge had previously ruled that he was not fit to plead on serious charges, which included attempted murder, criminal damage, possession of an offensive weapon, and a lock knife.

Jurors were informed that Woollen had maintained a friendship with the family residing in the attacked house for several years. The incident occurred on the night of October 7, when the homeowners were abruptly awakened around 22:40 BST by the distinct sound of breaking glass.

Prosecutor Claire Holmes presented evidence stating that Woollen was observed by the house occupants crouching near cars on the street outside the property. A 999 call made by the homeowner was played in court, where the caller reported that Woollen, of Perth Street in Hull, had been “trying to smash the front door in.”

Statements Following Arrest

Upon his arrest, Woollen made a peculiar statement to the police, claiming: “She has hypnotised me.” The arresting officer later testified to the jury, remarking, “It didn’t make sense to me.”
