Five-Year-Old Bonnie Howard Wins Global Title
A five-year-old girl has been crowned this year’s World Puddle Jumping Champion. Bonnie Howard, hailing from Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire, captivated the judges with her remarkable enthusiasm, the impressive distance of her splash, and her creative approach. Notably, she ingeniously created her own muddy puddle using a hosepipe during a recent period of dry weather, showcasing true dedication.
About the Championship
The annual World Puddle Jumping Championship, an event organized by Wicksteed Park in Kettering since 2013, encourages participants from around the globe to submit videos of themselves expertly jumping into any suitable puddle. The competition has garnered thousands of entries over the years, with past champions representing various locations across the UK and even as far as Australia.
Judging Criteria and Adaptations
Judges evaluate entries based on several key factors: the height of the jump, the distance of the splash, the participant’s overall enthusiasm, and the amount of mud that adheres to the competitor – a quality affectionately known as “stickability.” This year, in response to unusually dry conditions, the competition made an allowance for participants to use paddling pools, ensuring everyone had a fair chance to compete.Bonnie’s mother, Gemma Hill, shared her excitement, stating, “Bonnie is beside herself with excitement at winning. We had a great time, although I can’t say the same for my geraniums.
