On April 8, 2026, at 14:15 local time, Israel launched a significant wave of strikes against Lebanon. This offensive occurred just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump had announced a ceasefire agreement between the U.S., Israel, and Iran, intended to halt hostilities in the Gulf region.
Israeli authorities stated that their forces targeted 100 locations within a span of ten minutes. This rapid escalation reportedly extinguished hopes in Lebanon that the broader regional ceasefire would also bring an end to the violence within its borders.
Escalation of Conflict
The latest chapter in the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, a Lebanese militia and political party reportedly supported by Iran, began on March 2. The conflict intensified following Hezbollah’s rocket fire into Israel, which prompted extensive Israeli air strikes and a subsequent ground invasion of southern Lebanon.
According to Lebanon’s health ministry, more than 2,600 people have been killed in Lebanon since the conflict’s resurgence. The United Nations also reports that approximately one-fifth of the country’s population has been displaced due to the ongoing hostilities.
BBC correspondent Nawal Al-Maghafi has been investigating the events of that day, gathering accounts from individuals who lost loved ones during what has become one of the deadliest periods in Lebanon’s recent history.
