Americans React to Trump’s Reflecting Pool Renovation: ‘It’s Not a Swimming Pool’

Trump Initiates Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Renovation

President Donald Trump has commissioned a significant renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. This project is part of his broader initiative to make Washington D.C. ‘safe and beautiful’ in anticipation of the nation’s 250th birthday celebration this summer. Last week, contractors commenced work, notably beginning to paint the pool blue.

The historic reflecting pool, which spans an impressive 2,030 feet (620 meters) between the iconic Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, has faced numerous long-standing issues. These include persistent leaks, structural deterioration, faulty piping, significant algae growth, and an accumulation of bird droppings.

President Trump has asserted that his restoration and painting project will effectively resolve the leaking problems and enhance the pool’s beauty to an unprecedented level. However, questions remain regarding whether these specific repairs will adequately address the fundamental structural issues of the attraction, which dates back to its construction in 1922.

The BBC engaged with both tourists and local residents near the pool, finding a divided public opinion regarding the ongoing renovation efforts.
