New Zealand Unveils World Cup Squad: Smith and Wood Make History
New Zealand has announced its squad for the upcoming World Cup, featuring Braintree Town defender Tommy Smith and Nottingham Forest striker Chris Wood. Both players are set to make history as they become the first New Zealanders to participate in two men’s World Cups.
Smith, 36, was a key figure in New Zealand’s last World Cup appearance 16 years ago, starting all three group matches. Wood, 34, a Premier League forward, was also part of that historic 2010 squad. Despite Braintree’s recent relegation from the National League, Smith’s experience is highly valued. Wood, who recently returned to action in April after a six-month recovery from knee surgery, will captain the 26-man squad.
Looking Back and Ahead: World Cup Journey
New Zealand’s previous World Cup outing in 2010 marked only their second appearance after their 1982 debut. In that tournament, they achieved draws against strong teams like Italy, Slovakia, and Paraguay, though they did not advance to the knockout stages.
For the 2026 tournament, co-hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, New Zealand finds itself in a challenging group. They are scheduled to face Belgium, Egypt, and Iran in the group stage. The team will also play preparatory friendly matches, including one against Haiti and another against England in Tampa, Florida, on June 6.
