Trump Issues Stern Warning to Iran Amid Stalled Peace Talks
US President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning to Iran, stating that the “clock is ticking” as negotiations aimed at ending the ongoing conflict have reached an impasse. On his Truth Social platform, President Trump wrote, “They better get moving, FAST, or there won’t be anything left of them. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE!”
This message comes as President Trump was scheduled to engage in discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday.
Iranian Perspective: Lack of Concrete Concessions from US
Meanwhile, Iranian media outlets reported that the United States has failed to offer any concrete concessions in response to Tehran’s latest proposals for a resolution. The semi-official Mehr news agency indicated that a lack of compromise from Washington would inevitably lead to an “impasse in the negotiations.”
President Trump’s recent statements echo previous warnings, including a threat that a “whole civilisation” would perish unless Iran agreed to a peace deal, a sentiment expressed shortly before a ceasefire was announced in early April. Earlier this week, the president described the truce as being on “massive life support” after rejecting Tehran’s demands, labeling them “totally unacceptable.”
Esmail Baghaei, an Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson, maintained that Iran’s proposals were “responsible” and “generous.”
Iran’s Proposals and US Conditions
According to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency, Iran’s proposals included:
- An immediate end to the war on all fronts, referencing continued Israeli actions against Iran-supported Hezbollah in Lebanon.
- A halt to the US naval blockade of Iranian ports.
- Guarantees of no further attacks on Iran.
- Demands for compensation for war damage.
- An emphasis on Iranian sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.
In response, Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency reported on Sunday that Washington had set five conditions, reportedly including a demand that Iran maintain only one nuclear site in operation and transfer its stockpile of highly enriched uranium to the US.
On Friday, President Trump suggested he would accept a 20-year suspension by Iran of its nuclear program – a significant point of contention between the two nations. This appeared to confirm a shift in position from an earlier demand for a total cessation of the program.
Ongoing Mediation Efforts
Massive air strikes on Iran by Israeli and US forces commenced on February 28. Despite occasional exchanges of fire, the ceasefire, intended to facilitate talks, has largely been observed. Pakistan has been actively mediating between the US and Iran, though both sides still appear to be significantly far apart in their positions.
