World Gymnastics Reverses Ban on Russia and Belarus
World Gymnastics has announced the immediate lifting of all restrictions on Russian and Belarusian athletes. This decision marks a significant shift from the ban imposed in March 2022, which followed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, preventing athletes from both nations from participating in international competitions.
Return to International Competition Under National Flags
Initially, there was a provision for these athletes to compete as neutrals towards the end of 2024. However, the latest ruling now permits them to return to international competitions representing their national flags. World Gymnastics officially confirmed this development in a statement issued after a meeting of its executive committee held in Egypt last weekend.
The reinstated participation covers all five disciplines overseen by World Gymnastics, encompassing artistic, rhythmic, acrobatic, and aerobic gymnastics, alongside trampolining.
Historical Strength and Precedent
Russia has a distinguished history in gymnastics, known for its strong performance on the global stage. At the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, Russian athletes, competing under the Russian Olympic Committee banner, secured two gold medals and a total of 10 medals before their subsequent ban from Paris 2024.
This move by World Gymnastics aligns with similar decisions made by other international sports federations. Notably, World Aquatics lifted its restrictions in April, and the International Judo Federation followed suit last November. Furthermore, the International Paralympic Committee removed its suspension on athletes from Russia and Belarus last year, allowing them to compete in the 2026 Winter Paralympics in Milan-Cortina.
