BBC journalist Will Grant recently conducted an interview with former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, who received a pardon from US President Donald Trump in December.
Conviction and Presidential Pardon
Hernández was convicted in March 2024 on charges of drug trafficking and weapons offences, leading to a 45-year prison sentence. This conviction preceded the pardon granted by former President Trump. Trump publicly stated on Truth Social that Hernández had been “treated very harshly and unfairly” in the legal process.
Claims of Innocence
During the BBC interview, Hernández reiterated his claims of innocence regarding the charges. He also addressed the drug trafficking charges faced by his brother.
