China’s Grand Welcomes for Putin and Trump
Chinese President Xi Jinping recently extended a lavish welcome to his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in Beijing. The ceremony was elaborate, featuring national flags, a marching band, and enthusiastic cheering children.
This grand reception follows a visit by former US President Donald Trump last week. Trump’s visit also commenced with a nearly identical welcome ceremony, despite the significant differences in Beijing’s diplomatic relationships with Washington and Moscow.
BBC’s China correspondent, Laura Bicker, provides an analysis of the diplomatic implications behind these two remarkably warm welcomes.
