US Charges Former Cuban Leader Raúl Castro Decades After Plane Downing Incident

Havana has been the focal point of recent developments as the United States announced charges against former Cuban leader Raúl Castro. The indictment, revealed on Wednesday, accuses Castro and five other individuals of conspiracy to kill U.S. nationals and various other crimes. These charges specifically relate to the 1996 downing of two aircraft belonging to the Cuban-American organization Brothers to the Rescue. The incident tragically resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including three American citizens.

In response to these allegations, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel has strongly condemned the charges, describing them as a ‘political manoeuvre, devoid of any legal foundation.’

Despite being nearly 95 years old, Raúl Castro, brother of the late Fidel Castro, continues to be recognized as an influential figure within Cuba, often referred to as the surviving ‘leader of the Cuban Revolution.’ The timing of these charges, decades after the incident, raises questions about the evolving dynamics between the two nations.
