The UK Ministry of Defence announced on Wednesday that two Russian warplanes “dangerously” intercepted an unarmed RAF spy plane over the Black Sea last month.
Details of the Incident
A Russian Su-35 fighter jet reportedly approached the surveillance aircraft, an RAF Rivet Joint, close enough to activate its emergency systems. Simultaneously, a Su-27 jet conducted six passes in front of the British plane.
The Ministry of Defence stated that the Rivet Joint aircraft was engaged in a routine international flight, aimed at contributing to the security of NATO’s eastern flank.
BBC Security Correspondent Frank Gardner characterized the event as “really serious”, highlighting the potential for escalation amidst existing tensions between Russia and NATO.
