Foden, Palmer, Alexander-Arnold Miss Out on World Cup Squad

Key Players Excluded from England’s World Cup Squad

Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, and Trent Alexander-Arnold have not been included in Thomas Tuchel’s 26-man England squad for this summer’s World Cup. This decision marks a significant talking point ahead of the tournament.

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has also been left out, with the 33-year-old expressing his deep disappointment, stating he is “shocked and gutted” by the decision. His mother, Zoe, also took to social media to voice her “disgusted” reaction.

Surprise Inclusions and Notable Absences

In contrast, Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins, fresh from helping his side win the Europa League, has secured a place. He is joined by Al-Ahli striker Ivan Toney, who has had an impressive season, scoring 32 goals in 32 games in the Saudi Arabian league.

Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White, despite being the top-scoring English player in the Premier League this season alongside Watkins and Dominic Calvert-Lewin with 14 goals, has missed out. Manchester City’s Foden and Chelsea’s Palmer, both versatile attacking midfielders, have experienced inconsistent seasons, contributing to their exclusion.

Maguire, in an Instagram post, confirmed his confidence in playing a major part for his country, making his omission particularly hard to accept. His Manchester United teammate Luke Shaw has also been omitted despite an impressive season, with Newcastle’s Dan Burn and Manchester City’s Nico O’Reilly being called up instead.

Chelsea defender Levi Colwill and AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori are out, though Arsenal winger Noni Madueke has made the cut. He joins Premier League-winning teammates Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, and Eberechi Eze, who is rewarded for his excellent form. Tottenham defender Djed Spence has also made Tuchel’s squad, meaning there is no place for Real Madrid’s Alexander-Arnold, Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly, or Everton’s James Garner. Spence, 25, suffered a broken jaw recently but is expected to wear a protective mask.

The omissions of Maguire, Tomori, and Colwill mean Manchester City defender John Stones has been included, despite an injury-disrupted campaign. Tuchel views Stones as a key player, albeit with fitness concerns. Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton also misses out, but Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo retains his place after a recall for previous friendlies. Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson, a mainstay under Tuchel, also keeps his spot.

Player Performance and Aspirations

Foden has played 49 times for England but started only 22 Premier League games for City this season, scoring seven goals and providing five assists. Palmer scored nine goals in 25 Premier League games for Chelsea during an injury-hit campaign. Maguire, who has played 67 times for England, expressed his “desperate” desire to go to the World Cup, believing it would be his last. He stated his confidence in being “one of the best defenders in the world in both boxes.”

Tournament Details and Preparations

The World Cup, co-hosted by the US, Mexico, and Canada, begins on June 11. England will warm up with friendlies against New Zealand on June 6 and Costa Rica on June 10. Their World Cup campaign starts against Croatia on June 17, followed by group games against Ghana and Panama.

Expert Analysis: Tuchel’s Stance

Former England defender Phil Jagielka commented on the squad selection, noting that Foden and Palmer have had “not a great season,” and other players have “outperformed them at club level.” He highlighted Tuchel’s preference for “form and chemistry” over reputation. Regarding Ivan Toney’s inclusion, Jagielka suggested it might be for specific situations, such as resting Harry Kane or for his penalty-taking expertise, especially given the tournament’s hot conditions. On Maguire, Jagielka acknowledged his good form but respected Tuchel’s decision to “stick to his guns.”
