Pope Leo XIV’s Peace Mission to Cameroon
Pope Leo XIV has arrived in the African nation of Cameroon, advancing his calls for peace and coexistence, which have drawn strong reactions from United States President Donald Trump.
The first American pope landed in Cameroon on Wednesday, where he delivered remarks that criticized the “whims of the rich and powerful” and advocated for peace in a country grappling with sectarian conflict.
“It is time to examine our conscience and take a bold leap forward,” Pope Leo stated in a speech before President Paul Biya, who has governed Cameroon since 1982.
He added, “For peace and justice to prevail, the chains of corruption – which disfigure authority and strip it of its credibility – must be broken.”
A Tour Focused on Peace and Justice
Pope Leo is visiting Cameroon as part of a 10-day African tour, consistently delivering an outspoken message of peace, anticorruption, and social justice. His arrival in Cameroon followed a visit to Algeria, his initial stop on the trip.
His three-day visit to Cameroon is set to include a “peace meeting” in Bamenda, a city in the northwest that has been affected by fighting involving separatist forces. These forces have announced a three-day pause in hostilities for the duration of the Pope’s visit.
Clash with the Trump Administration
The Catholic leader’s firm stance on issues such as the rights and dignity of migrants, along with his criticism of certain US and Israeli policies regarding regional issues, including those involving Iran, has led to friction with the Trump administration.
The Pope has described Trump’s strong rhetoric concerning Iran as “truly unacceptable.” Furthermore, US Vice President JD Vance, a convert to Catholicism, recently advised the Pope to “be careful” when discussing theology.
President Trump himself has publicly criticized the head of the Catholic Church through social media posts, accusing him of being “weak on crime” and overly aligned with the political left.
These criticisms from the US president have caused discontent among some of his religious supporters. Trump also faced backlash after sharing a now-deleted social media image that appeared to portray him as Jesus Christ.
Diplomatic Response and Call for Restraint
Blaise Bebey Abong, a 38-year-old Cameroonian diplomat in Yaounde, expressed his shock to Reuters news agency. “I was utterly shocked to read President Trump’s remarks about the pope. Nowhere in modern history have we witnessed such verbal recklessness against an institution as revered as the papacy,” he said.
Abong characterized Trump’s comments as “unthinkable,” emphasizing that the Pope represents a “high moral authority” even for non-Christians. He suggested that the US leader’s dispute with the Pope could harm his perception in the region, even among his supporters.
Pope Leo has responded to these criticisms diplomatically yet firmly, stating that he has “no fear” of the Trump administration and will continue his advocacy for peace and opposition to war.
Kwaku Amoah, a Catholic Ghanaian, told Reuters that he understood the Pope’s decision not to engage directly. “The Church often encourages responding to hostility with restraint rather than escalation, and I commend the pope for exercising restraint.”
Promoting Tolerance and Unity
Reflecting on his visit to the Great Mosque of Algiers earlier in the week, the Pope underscored the necessity of a message of tolerance and unity in a world plagued by conflict.
He stated, “I think the visit to the mosque was significant to say that although we have different beliefs, we have different ways of worshipping, we have different ways of living, we can live together in peace.”
“And so I think that to promote that kind of image is something which the world needs to hear today.”
