Russian Attacks Result in Fatalities and Injuries Across Ukraine

Russia launched a wave of drone and missile attacks across Ukraine on Wednesday night, resulting in at least three fatalities, Ukrainian officials reported. These strikes followed a brief ceasefire coinciding with Orthodox Easter celebrations, during which both sides accused each other of numerous violations.

Widespread Attacks and Casualties

In the capital, Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that a 12-year-old boy was among two victims, with at least 18 people injured. Rescuers were able to extract a mother and child from the debris of a 16-story residential building that collapsed in Kyiv’s central Podilsky district. Additionally, four emergency medical workers were among those injured in the north of the capital due to repeated shelling.

The southeastern city of Dnipro also reported a fatality, with one person killed and at least 10 people injured, according to Oleksandr Ganzha, head of the regional administration. Online images depicted buildings ablaze in the city. Elsewhere, officials stated that a drone strike injured a 77-year-old woman and a 66-year-old man in Kharkiv, and five individuals were wounded in an attack on the southern port city of Odesa.

Cross-Border Incidents

Across the border, two children, aged five and 14, were tragically killed in a Ukrainian drone attack in Russia’s southern Krasnodar Krai region, as reported by its governor, Veniamin Kondratyev, on Telegram.

Context and Peace Efforts

The ongoing conflict continues amidst stalled peace negotiations. Ukraine has consistently proposed a full, stable ceasefire as a crucial first step towards achieving a lasting resolution to Russia’s invasion. However, Moscow insists on agreeing to a peace deal first, leading to accusations from Kyiv that Russia is not genuinely committed to ending the fighting. The process has reportedly been stalled since US President Donald Trump shifted his focus to the war in the Middle East.
