US to Deploy 10,000 Additional Troops to Middle East Amid Iran Ceasefire

The United States is reportedly preparing to deploy over 10,000 additional military personnel to the Middle East by the end of April. This significant move, as disclosed by US officials to The Washington Post, is intended to intensify pressure on Iran.

Citing current and former US officials who spoke anonymously, The Washington Post reported on Tuesday that approximately 6,000 troops are being dispatched aboard the USS George H.W. Bush aircraft carrier and its accompanying escort ships to the region. Additionally, around 4,200 service members from the Boxer Amphibious Ready Group, including its embarked 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, are anticipated to arrive towards the close of the month.

Previously, it had been announced that roughly 50,000 troops had been engaged in operations related to the conflict with Iran since its commencement on February 28. With the impending arrival of the USS George H.W. Bush, which is reportedly navigating around Africa, the total number of aircraft carriers in the region will reach three. The USS Abraham Lincoln and the USS Gerald R. Ford are already stationed in the Middle East and have participated in recent engagements.

This report, which Al Jazeera stated it was unable to independently verify, emerges as the US proceeded on Wednesday with a naval blockade. US officials assert that this blockade has successfully disrupted maritime trade with Iran.

Naval Blockade Intensifies

US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced overnight via social media that its previously declared blockade had been **”fully implemented.”** CENTCOM further stated that American forces have **”completely halted economic trade going into and out of Iran by sea.”** However, maritime tracking data from Tuesday presented a less definitive picture, indicating that several vessels departing from Iranian ports had managed to traverse the Strait of Hormuz despite the ongoing blockade.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump informed The New York Post on Tuesday that a new round of discussions with Iran might occur in Pakistan **”over the next two days,”** following an initial lengthy negotiating session that concluded without a significant breakthrough. Last week, high-stakes talks in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, failed to yield an agreement between the US and Iran to end the conflict. Nevertheless, a two-week ceasefire, declared a week prior, has remained in effect. This truce is scheduled to expire on April 22.

According to the officials who spoke to The Washington Post, the deployment of these new troops is intended to allow the US administration to continue diplomatic talks with Iran, while simultaneously preparing for the **”possibility of additional strikes or ground operations.”**
