A report has revealed that Jersey’s digitalised Goods and Services Tax (GST) refund scheme for visitors has generated £4.6 million since last year. The ‘future-fit retail roadmap 2025 delivery report’ indicated that over 500 forms have been issued through the digital scheme since July of last year. This scheme allows visitors to reclaim 5% on purchases exceeding £100.
The government stated that the report’s objective is to foster growth and revitalise Jersey’s retail sector, building upon the foundations laid by its interim retail strategy, which has been in place since 2021. The digital initiative has also significantly expanded the number of registered retailers, growing from four, who previously relied on a paper-based system, to 15.
Visitors departing Jersey can claim their refunds at designated kiosks located in the airport and harbour. However, the scheme has certain limitations: visitors cannot claim GST back if they depart by private boat or aircraft, or if their purchases were made from a retailer not registered with the scheme.
Deputy Kirsten Morel, the Minister for Sustainable Economic Development, emphasised the crucial role of retail, stating it is “essential to enriching our social and cultural fabric.” He added, “By working together with the many stakeholders and seeking to always improve, the retail sector is cementing its vital role in our economy and society.”
