Andy Kershaw, BBC world music pioneer and war reporter, dies at 66

Broadcaster and former BBC Radio 1 DJ Andy Kershaw has died at the age of 66. His family confirmed the death of the veteran presenter, who had been undergoing cancer treatment after tumours limiting his mobility were discovered in his spine last August.

Kershaw worked for the BBC for almost three decades and became known for championing world music and pioneering international reporting. He presented a Radio 1 show from 1985 to 2000, introducing British audiences to music from across the globe.

International Reporting

Beyond music programming, Kershaw distinguished himself through frontline journalism. He covered the 1994 Rwandan genocide and reported from Sierra Leone in 2001 during its civil war. The BBC says he documented radio diaries from North Korea that were reportedly among the first recorded inside the country.

Later Career

Kershaw joined BBC Radio 3 in 2001, where he continued until 2007. His career faced disruption when he was jailed after breaking a restraining order following the breakdown of his relationship with Juliette Banner.

He returned to the BBC in 2010 for Music Planet and again in 2020 for The Kershaw Tapes. His sister Liz Kershaw is a long-serving BBC radio DJ.
