FIFA Warns of ‘Chilling Effect’ from Steep World Cup Train Fares

Fifa has responded to criticism from New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill regarding the significantly inflated train fares for the 2026 World Cup, stating that these costs could create issues far beyond just impacting fans financially.

Governor Sherrill has attributed the problem to world football’s governing body, highlighting that supporters face a charge of $150 (£111) for a mere 30-minute NJ Transit train journey from New York to MetLife Stadium in New Jersey for World Cup matches. She urged Fifa to subsidise the cost of public transport for these games.

No Concessions for High Fares

There are currently no concession prices available for this journey, meaning that children and seniors are also required to pay the full $150 fare. In contrast, shuttle bus tickets are priced at $80 (£59).

Heimo Schirgi, Fifa’s chief operating officer for the tournament, commented on the situation, stating: “The NJ Transit current pricing model will have a ‘chilling effect’.”

Schirgi reiterated Fifa’s primary objectives for the World Cup: “to minimise congestion, reduce reliance on private vehicles, and ensure the fan experience is positive and memorable defined by the action on pitch, not delays on the roads.”

Potential Negative Impacts

He further elaborated on the consequences of high fares, explaining: “Elevated fares inevitably push fans towards alternative transportation options. This increases concerns of congestion, late arrivals, and creates broader ripple effects that ultimately diminish the economic benefit and lasting legacy the entire region stands to gain from hosting the World Cup.”
