An installation featuring 20,000 teddy bears has been placed on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., aiming to draw attention to Ukrainian children believed to have been taken to Russia.
The US-based Razom for Ukraine organization and the American Coalition for Ukraine organized the display. It symbolizes the estimated 20,000 children that Ukraine states have been illegally sent to Russia and Belarus since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022. Organizers are urging Congress to address this issue, which the United Nations has described as a potential crime against humanity.
President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Wednesday that over 2,100 children have been reunited with their families through the Bring Kids Back UA initiative. This program has been actively tracing and facilitating the return of Ukrainian children from Russian-occupied territories and Russia since 2023.
