A clearer understanding is developing regarding the individual apprehended in connection with a shooting incident at a Washington D.C. hotel. This incident occurred on Saturday night, coinciding with the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner held at the same venue.
On Monday, Cole Tomas Allen, 31, made an initial court appearance. He faces charges including the attempted assassination of U.S. President Donald Trump, alongside two firearms-related offenses. Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. Attorney for Washington, indicated during a press conference that further charges against Allen might be forthcoming.
Allen, who identified himself as a mechanical engineer, game developer, and teacher, hails from Torrance, a suburb of Los Angeles. He is scheduled to return to court on Thursday for a hearing to determine his custodial status. Additional charges include using a firearm during a violent crime and the interstate transportation of a firearm with the intent to commit a felony.
During the Monday press briefing, Ms. Pirro referenced an email Allen allegedly sent to his family and a former employer just prior to the shooting incident at the event. An affidavit states that Allen allegedly wrote to his relatives, ‘Administration officials… are targets, prioritized from highest-ranking to lowest.’ In the same email, he reportedly referred to himself as ‘Friendly Federal Assassin’ Allen,’ with an attached document titled ‘Apology and Explanation.’
Alleged Timeline of Events
Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche outlined the alleged sequence of events during the Monday news conference. Blanche stated that on April 21, Allen departed his Los Angeles-area residence by train, traveling to Chicago. By April 24, the day before the dinner, he had traveled from Chicago to Washington D.C., where he checked into the Washington Hilton hotel for an overnight stay.
According to Blanche, on April 25, Allen approached a security checkpoint for the event and ‘ran through while holding a long gun.’ The Secret Service subsequently ‘heard a loud gunshot,’ Blanche reported. He added that one agent ‘was shot in the chest but wore a ballistic vest which worked,’ though the source of the shot that struck the agent remains unclear. Blanche confirmed that the weapon allegedly discharged by Allen was a shotgun. Ms. Pirro noted that Allen sustained no injuries apart from a scrape to his knee.
Law enforcement officials indicated that Allen exchanged gunfire with security agents on a floor of the Washington Hilton located one level above the room where former President Trump, cabinet members, journalists, and other guests were assembled. Following his detention, Allen reportedly informed officials of his intent to target officials within the Republican administration, as disclosed by two sources to CBS, a BBC U.S. partner.
Background and Social Media Activity
Federal campaign finance records reveal that Allen made a $25 donation to a Democratic Party political action committee supporting Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign for 2024. U.S. media outlets, citing law enforcement sources, have reported on Allen’s history of anti-Trump social media posts. BBC Verify has been investigating social media accounts linked to the username reportedly used to sign the email allegedly sent by Allen to his family.
In January, an account on the Bluesky social network posted: ‘The country will continue to crash and burn until people stop asking when other people will step up.’ In April, the same account characterized Trump as a ‘villain’ and a ‘desperate man.’ In a reshare of a video featuring Vice-President JD Vance discussing the cessation of Ukraine war funding as a proud achievement, the user commented, ‘he’s proud that we don’t uphold our commitments,’ followed by an expletive. Earlier this month, a Bluesky post criticized journalists’ plans to wear white pocket squares at the White House media gala to promote press freedom, labeling the gesture as ‘pathetic.’
On Sunday, former President Trump commented to Fox News that Allen ‘had a lot of hatred in his heart for a while.’
Community Reaction and Professional Profile
The day after the shooting, Allen’s typically quiet Torrance neighborhood was inundated with media presence. Local residents expressed shock, many believing he resided with his parents and recalling regular waves but little personal acquaintance. Several neighbors noted that the garage windows of the residence appeared covered, a detail they had not observed previously.
On his LinkedIn profile, Allen described himself as a mechanical engineer, game developer, and teacher. His profile indicates he studied mechanical engineering at the highly competitive California Institute of Technology (Caltech), participating in its Christian fellowship. The pastor of Pasadena United Reformed Church in the Los Angeles area informed the BBC that Allen was a worshipper there.
Allen reportedly graduated with a master’s degree in computer science in 2025 from California State University, Dominguez Hills, sharing a graduation photo on LinkedIn. Bin Tang, a computer science professor at Cal State, described Allen to CBS as an exemplary student. Professor Tang remarked, ‘He was a very good student indeed, always sitting in the first row of my class, paying attention, and frequently emailing me with coursework questions,’ further characterizing Allen as ‘soft spoken, very polite, a good fellow.’ The professor concluded, ‘I am very shocked to see the news.’
Allen also developed and released a game titled ‘Bohrdom’ on the Steam gaming platform. Facebook photos of Allen, verified by BBC Verify against his arrest images at the Washington Hilton, depict him smiling in family Christmas and graduation pictures. According to a Facebook post from C2 Education, an organization providing tutoring and college test preparation, Allen was named teacher of the month in December 2024. His LinkedIn profile indicates he has been a part-time teacher at C2 Education since 2020. The Torrance Unified School District issued a statement to CBS confirming that Allen has never been an employee of their district.
