New £9.5 Million Mortuary Unveiled in Northampton

State-of-the-Art Facility Opens

A **new £9.5 million mortuary** has officially opened its doors in Northampton. The **County Mortuary**, strategically built on council-owned land in Riverside, is designed to centralize post-mortem services, thereby eliminating the need for grieving families to travel between multiple locations.

Enhanced Services for Families

This modern facility boasts a range of features aimed at providing a more respectful and peaceful environment during difficult times. It includes **private viewing rooms**, dedicated facilities for **cultural washing**, and quiet areas specifically designed to support bereaved families. Robin Binks, nursing director at University Hospitals of Northamptonshire, emphasized that the new mortuary would offer families visiting their deceased loved ones a “**much nicer environment during a very difficult time**.”

Addressing Previous Challenges and Future Preparedness

The development of this facility was deemed essential by West Northamptonshire Council in 2025, citing that existing provisions were “fragile and increasingly expensive.” The council anticipates that the new mortuary will generate **nearly £500,000 in annual savings** for the authority. Beyond its daily operations, the mortuary is robustly designed to **handle major incidents or disasters involving multiple fatalities**, significantly enhancing the local resilience forum’s capabilities and improving coordination during emergencies. Furthermore, it will enable police to deploy family liaison officers more swiftly, ensuring families receive timely information.

Sadie Nightingale, head of coroners, registrations and bereavement services at the council, expressed her hopes for the facility, stating: “We are very fortunate to have this facility in the county and hope it will **make a difference to bereaved families**.”
