Zayn Malik has announced the cancellation of his upcoming US solo tour and two UK arena shows, following revelations that he had recently been admitted to hospital.
The former One Direction singer released a statement on his Instagram page, informing fans that he needed to “take another look” at his schedule. Malik stated he is working towards being “better and stronger than before” but would need to reduce the number of performances on his upcoming Konnakol tour, named after his latest album.
Malik has previously cancelled live dates citing “extreme anxiety,” though he has not specified the reason for his most recent cancellations. A photograph of Malik in hospital was shared on an official updates page two weeks prior to the announcement. A week later, a comment attributed to the singer was added, indicating it had been a “long week” and he was still “unexpectedly recovering.” This was followed by his most recent Instagram post, confirming the cancelled shows.
He expressed gratitude to fans for their “prayers and well-wishes,” adding, “I’ve felt it and it’s meant the world. I’ve been at home recovering and I’m doing well and will be better and stronger than before.”
**Glasgow and Dublin Dates Cancelled**
In February, Malik had announced his largest-ever solo tour, comprising 31 dates worldwide, set to commence at Manchester’s AO Arena on May 12. The rescheduled tour will now begin on May 23 and feature only nine dates. Malik is now expected to perform his first UK show at London’s O2 on May 23, followed by Manchester’s AO the next day. Shows in Glasgow, Birmingham, and Dublin have been cancelled, while performances in Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Peru, and Brazil are still scheduled to proceed.
Morvan Dick, a fan of Malik, shared with BBC Newsbeat that she had tickets for the Glasgow show and had planned to attend with her boyfriend. “We had booked time off work to go, and a hotel,” she stated. “I am actually devastated to be honest, gutted doesn’t really cut it at this point. I have been a fan since day one so it’s just a bucket list thing.” However, she emphasized that Malik’s “health comes first before anything.”
Customers who booked through Ticketmaster have been informed that refunds will be issued automatically, and tickets for the Manchester show will remain valid for the new date. BBC Newsbeat has reached out to Zayn Malik’s team for further comment.
