Germany Calls US Troop Withdrawal ‘Foreseeable’ Amid NATO Clarification Efforts

Germany Reacts to US Troop Withdrawal Announcement

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has stated that the United States’ decision to withdraw 5,000 troops from his country was “foreseeable.” This announcement comes as the NATO military alliance seeks clarification from Washington regarding the move.

Speaking to the DPA news agency, Pistorius underscored that “the presence of American soldiers in Europe, and particularly in Germany, is in our interest and in the interest of the US.” He further emphasized that Europe must assume greater responsibility for its own security, noting Berlin’s commitment to closer cooperation with continental allies. Germany, he added, is on the right track, having significantly boosted its military spending in recent years.

NATO Seeks Details and Urges European Investment

Meanwhile, NATO spokeswoman Allison Hart confirmed that the alliance is “working with the US to understand the details of their decision.” In a post on X, Hart highlighted that the US troop withdrawal “underscores the need for Europe to continue to invest more in defence and take on a greater share of the responsibility for our shared security.” She noted progress since allies agreed to invest 5% of GDP at the NATO summit last year.

Context: Trump’s Criticism and Merz’s Comments

Washington’s decision follows President Donald Trump’s criticism of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Merz had previously commented that the US had been “humiliated” by Iranian negotiators in ongoing discussions.

Trump had also previously accused Germany of being “delinquent” on military spending. However, under the Merz government, Germany’s defence expenditure has seen a radical increase, projected to reach €105.8 billion (£91 billion) in 2027, equating to 3.1% of GDP when accounting for other defence funds, including aid to Ukraine.

Broader Implications and International Reactions

The US military deployment in Germany, currently exceeding 36,000 active duty troops, remains its largest in Europe. Trump has also suggested potential troop withdrawals from Italy and Spain, and last year reduced troop presence in Romania as part of a strategic shift towards the Indo-Pacific region.

Concerns are mounting within the 32-member NATO alliance that this latest US decision could weaken the organization. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned on Saturday, “The greatest threat to the transatlantic community are not its external enemies, but the ongoing disintegration of our alliance. We must all do what it takes to reverse this disastrous trend.”

Two senior US lawmakers from Trump’s Republican party, Senator Roger Wicker and Representative Mike Rogers, expressed deep concern, stating that “it is in the US interest to maintain a strong deterrent in Europe” rather than withdrawing forces.

The Triggering Spat: Merz vs. Trump

The recent disagreement between Trump and Merz was sparked by the German Chancellor’s comments to university students. Merz stated that “the Americans clearly have no strategy” and that “the Iranians are obviously very skilled at negotiating, or rather, very skilful at not negotiating, letting the Americans travel to Islamabad and then leave again without any result.” He added that the “entire nation” was being “humiliated” by Iran.

In response, Trump took to his platform Truth Social, asserting that Merz thought it was “OK for Iran to have a Nuclear Weapon” and “doesn’t know what he’s talking about.” The US troop withdrawal announcement closely followed these exchanges.

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed that the order for withdrawal came from Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, with the process expected to be completed over the next six to twelve months.

Trump, a long-standing critic of the NATO alliance, has also previously criticized allies for their refusal to participate in operations to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil shipping route. Iran has reportedly limited traffic through the waterway in response to US and Israeli actions, while the US has enforced a naval blockade on Iranian ports in the Gulf.
