US Charges Mexican Governor and Officials with Aiding Drug Cartel

US Accuses Mexican Governor of Cartel Conspiracy

US prosecutors have leveled serious accusations against **Rubén Rocha Moya**, the sitting governor of Mexico’s **Sinaloa state**, alleging his involvement in a conspiracy with drug traffickers from the powerful **Sinaloa Cartel**. The indictment, unsealed in New York, claims that Rocha Moya, a member of President **Claudia Sheinbaum’s** party, along with nine other current and former Mexican government officials, “conspired with leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel to import massive quantities of narcotics into the United States in exchange for political support and bribes.”

Specifically, Governor Rocha Moya is accused of abusing his position to protect the **Los Chapitos** faction of the Sinaloa Cartel. **DEA Administrator Terrance Cole** highlighted the cartel’s nature, stating it is “not just trafficking deadly drugs, it is a designated terrorist organization that relies on corruption and bribery to drive violence and profit.” **US Attorney Jay Clayton** further emphasized that such drug trafficking organizations could not operate effectively “without corrupt politicians and law enforcement officials on their payroll.”

Mexican Government Responds to Allegations

In response to the charges, the **Mexican government** issued a statement asserting that the US documents requesting the arrests and potential extradition of the accused **lacked sufficient evidence**. The Mexican foreign ministry noted that the documents “do not include the elements of proof” required. Consequently, Mexican authorities have announced their own investigation to determine the legal grounds of the US accusations.

Governor Rocha Moya has **categorically and absolutely denied** all drug charges, calling the indictment an “attack against the Fourth Transformation,” referring to Mexico’s governing party’s political project. This indictment against a sitting governor from the ruling party is considered a **rare and significant development** in the bilateral relationship between the US and Mexico, posing a considerable challenge for President Sheinbaum’s administration. It is also seen as the latest move in an aggressive strategy by the Trump administration to combat drug cartels and official corruption.
