Small Boat Arrivals Exceed 800 in Early May

More than 800 individuals crossed the English Channel in small boats during the first three days of May, according to official government figures.

The Home Office reported that 55 people were brought to Dover on Friday, followed by 325 on Saturday, and 422 on Sunday.

Year-to-Date Figures and Tragic Incidents

These recent arrivals bring the total number of individuals who have arrived by small boat this year to 7,218. In comparison, during the corresponding period of the previous year, the number of people who had made the crossing was 11,516.

Tragically, on Sunday, two women lost their lives while attempting to cross the Channel.

A spokesperson for the Home Office stated, ‘This government is bearing down on small boat crossings.’ They highlighted that the Home Secretary has signed a significant new agreement with France aimed at enhancing enforcement actions on beaches and ensuring people smugglers are brought to justice.

The spokesperson further added, ‘This builds on joint work that has prevented over 42,000 individuals from attempting to cross the Channel without authorisation since the election. We have removed or deported almost 60,000 people who were in the country without legal status and are taking further steps to eliminate the incentives that attract individuals to this country illegally.’
