Former US President Donald Trump has reportedly removed a contentious post from his Truth Social platform that depicted him as a Jesus-like figure healing a sick man. The AI-generated image, which showed Trump with a glowing hand on a patient’s forehead in a hospital bed, drew significant criticism from across the US political spectrum, including from some of his staunch supporters.
Trump initially acknowledged posting the picture, stating he believed it portrayed him as “a doctor.” However, he later told CBS News that he removed the image because he “didn’t want to have anybody be confused. People were confused.” The deleted image featured Trump in a white robe, with elements like the Statue of Liberty, a US flag, fighter jets, an eagle, and a praying woman in the background, which critics likened to religious depictions of Jesus healing the infirm.
Criticism was swift and widespread. Sean Feucht, a Christian activist, called for its immediate deletion, stating, “There’s no context where this is acceptable.” Conservative activist Riley Gaines commented, “God shall not be mocked.” Faith-based US news outlets also weighed in, with David Brody of the Christian Broadcasting Network remarking, “This goes too far. It crosses the line.”
The controversial post surfaced just hours after Trump published a lengthy message criticizing Pope Leo XIV, the first American Pope, whom he called “weak on crime” and “terrible for foreign policy.” Pope Leo XIV has been a vocal critic of the US and Israeli military operation in Iran, condemning it as leading to “absurd and inhuman violence.” Speaking to reporters, Trump defended his criticism of the Pope, stating, “Pope Leo said things that are wrong.” He did not apologize for his remarks.
This incident is not the first time Trump’s Truth Social account has sparked controversy. In February, a racist clip depicting Barack and Michelle Obama as apes was posted and subsequently removed after widespread condemnation, including from Republican senators. The White House initially defended that clip as an “internet meme video” before removing it and attributing the post to a staffer’s error.
