Lebanese Neighborhoods Devastated by Israeli Strikes Amid Regional Tensions

At 14:15 local time on 8 April 2026, Israel launched a massive wave of strikes against Lebanon. This occurred just hours after US President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire between the US, Israel, and Iran, intended to pause fighting in the Gulf region.

Israel stated it struck 100 targets in 10 minutes. This rapid escalation occurred despite hopes in Lebanon that a pause in fighting in the Gulf region might lead to a de-escalation of violence in their country.

Escalation of Conflict

The latest conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, a Lebanese political and paramilitary organization that receives support from Iran, began on 2 March. The conflict escalated after the group fired rockets into Israel, which subsequently responded with widespread air strikes and a ground invasion of southern Lebanon.

Since the conflict began, more than 2,600 people in Lebanon have been killed, according to Lebanon’s health ministry. Additionally, roughly a fifth of the population has been displaced, as reported by the UN.

The BBC’s Nawal Al-Maghafi has been investigating the events of that day, documenting the experiences of individuals who lost loved ones during one of the deadliest chapters in the country’s recent history.
