Members of the British Army have executed a challenging parachute operation onto the remote Atlantic island of Tristan da Cunha. The mission was launched to provide urgent medical assistance to a British national suspected of having Hantavirus.
The specialized team included two paratroopers, an intensive care nurse, and a specialist doctor, who jumped in tandem. Crucial medical supplies were also delivered as part of the aid effort.
The patient, a resident of Britain’s most remote inhabited overseas territory, had disembarked from the cruise ship MV Hondius in mid-April. The MV Hondius had previously been affected by a deadly outbreak of the virus.
Captain George Lacey, who participated in the jump with the Pathfinders Platoon from Colchester Garrison, described the mission as “a particularly tricky one” due to high winds.
The medical team is expected to remain on the island for several days, awaiting the patient’s recovery. Captain Lacey noted the logistical challenge, stating, “sadly, you can’t parachute back off the island.”
