Iran’s World Cup Squad Faces Visa Delays Amidst Geopolitical Tensions

Iran’s World Cup Visa Predicament

The Iranian national football team is currently facing significant delays in obtaining visas for the upcoming World Cup, according to Medhi Taj, president of the Iranian Football Association (FA). This development comes as thousands of fans gathered in Tehran for a departure rally, ahead of the tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, set to commence on June 11.

Geopolitical Backdrop and Visa Concerns

The delay is unfolding against a complex geopolitical backdrop, with the United States and Iran currently observing a month-long ceasefire amidst ongoing tensions. Mr. Taj expressed his concern, stating that the “visa issue has still not been resolved.” He further indicated that a decisive meeting with Fifa is imminent, where the Iranian FA expects guarantees regarding the visa process. “We have not received any account from the other side regarding who has been granted visas. No visas have been issued yet,” Taj informed the state news agency IRNA.

Tournament Schedule and Fifa’s Assurance

Iran’s schedule includes matches against New Zealand on June 15 and Belgium on June 21, both in Los Angeles, followed by a game against Egypt in Seattle on June 26. The team is slated to be based in Tucson, Arizona. Despite the uncertainties stemming from the geopolitical situation, Fifa president Gianni Infantino affirmed Iran’s participation last month at Fifa’s annual congress in Vancouver, stating, “Of course, Iran will play in the United States of America.”

Border Incident and Entry Restrictions

The Iranian delegation, including President Taj, was notably absent from the Fifa congress after being turned away at the Canadian border. Taj attributed their return home to what he perceived as disrespectful treatment by immigration officials. However, Canada’s immigration minister later informed parliament that Taj’s visa was cancelled during his flight due to his alleged links to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has publicly stated that while Iranian players will be welcomed at the tournament, individuals with connections to the IRGC could potentially face entry restrictions. In response, the Iranian Football Federation (FFIRI) has reportedly presented Fifa with a list of ten conditions for their participation, which includes ensuring visas for players, coaches, and officials who have completed military service with the IRGC.
