Gabby Logan Responds to Gary Lineker’s Criticism of BBC’s World Cup Coverage Strategy

Gabby Logan has responded to Gary Lineker after the former BBC presenter seemingly criticized the broadcaster’s decision to base its World Cup studio in the UK. Logan offered a strong defence of the BBC’s strategy for a “work-from-home” World Cup studio, following Lineker’s description of it as “a green box in Salford.”

Lineker’s Initial Comments

Last month, Lineker, a former BBC presenter, openly criticized the corporation, stating that his departure allowed him to cover the tournament from New York. He expressed no regrets about not anchoring the BBC’s coverage of this summer’s event, making these remarks at a London event for the launch of Netflix’s Sports Club. Lineker, who previously held the position of the BBC’s highest-paid star with a £1.35 million annual salary, commented: “I was originally going to do it for the BBC this summer but that didn’t transpire and I would have been in Salford in a green box and now I’m going to be in New York City overlooking Times Square with lots of great guests.”

Gabby Logan Defends BBC’s Approach

Logan, who is set to join the BBC’s presenting team for this summer’s World Cup in North America, has now responded to Lineker, defending the broadcaster’s decision to remain in the United Kingdom for the majority of the five-and-a-half-week tournament. “We did the Women’s World Cup like this,” Logan stated. “We also covered the Women’s Euros – the last Euros – in a similar fashion, where we were in the studio in Salford and then travelled [to Switzerland] for the latter stages.” She emphasized the financial considerations: “It’s a very expensive undertaking to send a large team to major tournaments, so we must consider that, especially with the ongoing tightening of budgets related to the licence fee.” Logan concluded, “There are many valid reasons for this approach, and I believe our coverage in those tournaments has been exceptional and even award-winning, as demonstrated by last week’s BAFTAs. Therefore, I don’t think not being present for the entire tournament has negatively impacted our coverage.”

BBC’s World Cup Presenting and Punditry Team

The BBC unveiled its impressive line-up for this summer’s World Cup on Monday. Presenters include Gabby Logan, Mark Chapman, Kelly Cates, and Alex Scott. A host of former England internationals will serve as pundits, such as Wayne Rooney, Micah Richards, Alan Shearer, Joe Hart, Paul Robinson, Steph Houghton, Ellen White, and Danny Murphy. Representing Scotland, which is participating in its first World Cup since 1998, will be Scott Brown, Rachel Corsie, and James McFadden. To provide a global perspective, the BBC has also enlisted Olivier Giroud, Gael Clichy, Cesar Azpilicueta, Benni McCarthy, and Lucas Leiva. Additionally, former Tottenham and Brentford manager Thomas Frank will offer his analysis, alongside ex-Wales captain Ashley Williams. Former referee Darren Cann is also set to provide insights on key decisions throughout the tournaments in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Cann, Rooney, Richards, and Chapman recently featured in the BBC’s FA Cup final coverage on Saturday.
