While UK minesweepers and anti-drone capabilities will continue operations in the region, British naval vessels and personnel will not be deployed to block Iranian ports.

Speaking to BBC 5 Live, the Prime Minister emphasized his focus on reopening the crucial Strait of Hormuz shipping channel to reduce energy prices “as quickly as possible.” The US announced its blockade after diplomatic talks with Iran failed to achieve a lasting peace agreement to end hostilities in the Middle East.

Following a meeting between US and Iranian negotiators in Islamabad, Pakistan, President Donald Trump declared that the US would begin “BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz.” US Central Command (Centcom) later confirmed its forces would enforce the blockade “impartially” on vessels entering and exiting Iranian ports, including those in the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. Centcom also clarified that US forces would not obstruct the freedom of vessels transiting to and from non-Iranian ports, with further details to be provided to commercial mariners via official notice before the blockade commences.

Sir Keir, recently returned from a visit to the Gulf, affirmed his efforts with allies to “keep the Strait open, not shut.” He added, “We’re not supporting the blockade, and all of the marshalling diplomatically, politically, and capability-wise… that’s all focused, from our point of view, on getting the Strait fully open.” He acknowledged the UK’s mine-sweeping capability but declined to discuss operational specifics.

Sir Keir has consistently ruled out direct UK military involvement in the conflict. In his BBC interview, he stated, “My decision has been very clearly that whatever the pressure – and there’s been some considerable pressure – we’re not getting dragged into the war. That’s not in our national interest, because I’m not going to act unless there’s a clear, lawful basis and a clear thought-through plan.”

This week, the UK and France will co-host a summit aimed at “advancing work on a coordinated, independent, multinational plan to safeguard international shipping when the conflict ends.” Trump previously told Fox News that other nations would assist in blockading the strait, though he did not name them. He also mentioned that NATO offered to help “clean out” the strait, ensuring it would be freely usable “in not too long a distance.” Trump indicated the US would deploy minesweepers, and that the UK, as a NATO member, would do the same. “I understand the UK and a couple of other countries are sending minesweepers,” Trump remarked.

Approximately one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments traverse the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway effectively cut off by Iran since US-Israeli strikes began on February 28. Global benchmark Brent crude oil surged above $US100 a barrel after the blockade announcement, up from approximately $71 before the conflict.

While the government is set to increase fuel duty in September, opposition parties have urged the Prime Minister to reconsider. Sir Keir noted the situation was “kept under review,” adding that “a lot will depend on what happens in the next few weeks.”

In an earlier call with French President Emmanuel Macron, Sir Keir underscored “the need to work with a wide coalition of partners to protect freedom of navigation” in the Strait of Hormuz. A UK government spokesperson confirmed, “We are urgently working with France and other partners to put together a wide coalition to protect freedom of navigation.” The spokesperson also asserted that ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz “must not be subject to tolling,” following reports that Iran had begun demanding $2 million (£1.5 million) in transit fees from tankers.

Despite the UK not being involved in the US-Iran talks in Pakistan, Sir Keir cautioned against “further escalation” in the Middle East after the failure to reach an agreement. Chancellor Rachel Reeves is scheduled to travel to Washington this week for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) meeting, where she will advocate for the reopening of the Hormuz shipping channel.

#UKPolitics #StraitOfHormuz #IranBlockade #KeirStarmer #DonaldTrump #MiddleEastConflict #GlobalShipping #EnergyPrices #Geopolitics #NATO

Sir Keir Starmer has stated that the United Kingdom will not participate in enforcing the US military blockade of Iran.
