Trump had asserted that the new leadership, following the reported demise of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and subsequent American and Israeli strikes, was “less radical and much more reasonable.”

Trump stated earlier this month: “If you look already because the one regime was decimated, destroyed. The next regime is mostly dead. And the third regime, we’re dealing with different people than anybody’s dealt with before. It’s a whole different group of people. So I would consider that regime change.”

On-the-Ground Perspective from Iran

However, reporting directly from Iran, Doucet, the BBC’s chief international correspondent, challenged this narrative. “Trump keeps saying he’s brought about regime change,” Doucet told BBC Radio 4′s Today programme. “There’s really no sign of that and the Iranians would be the first to tell you, yes, the faces have changed, but it’s still the same order.”

The Iranian regime has indicated that Ayatollah Khamenei has been succeeded by his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, though the latter has not made any public appearances since the announcement of his new role.

Indications from Recent Negotiations

Doucet highlighted last week’s negotiations in Islamabad, Pakistan, between US and Iranian delegations, led by JD Vance, as an initial insight into the nature of the new leadership. “These talks – these face-to-face, high-level talks which took place in Islamabad with a US delegation headed by JD Vance – they give us the first indications of what kind of a leadership this is going to be and what they will do for their people, or indeed against their people,” she explained.

Further observations by Doucet suggest a hardening stance rather than moderation. She noted that the new head of the supreme national security council is described as “a hardliner among the hardliners.” Additionally, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is “literally calling the shoots,” indicating a more dominant and militarized role. This aligns with long-standing speculation about the IRGC’s increasing influence, which Doucet stated is now manifesting “in an even more dramatic way, more militarised, more hardline.”

Doucet concluded by observing the regime’s internal control: “There’s no doubt that while they [Iran’s leaders] have been fighting an external enemy, they’ve been keeping a tight grip on the internal enemies as well, as they would see it.”

#Iran #RegimeChange #DonaldTrump #LyseDoucet #BBCNews #MiddleEast #USForeignPolicy #AyatollahKhamenei #IRGC #InternationalRelations

BBC Expert Challenges Trump’s Assertion of Iranian Regime Change Lyse Doucet, a prominent BBC correspondent, has cast doubt on former US President Donald Trump’s claim that American actions led to a leadership change within the Iranian regime.
