The teenager, a British national from Brent whose identity is protected for legal reasons, was apprehended by the Met Police on Sunday. This followed an incident on Saturday night where a bottle containing an accelerant was thrown through a window of Kenton United Synagogue on Shaftesbury Avenue, Kenton. The building sustained minor damage, though no injuries were reported. The Community Security Trust, a Jewish charity, confirmed minor smoke damage to an internal room but no significant structural damage or injuries.

At Westminster Magistrates’ Court, District Judge Nina Tempia granted the teenager bail under conditions including residing at his home address and refraining from entering any synagogue. He is scheduled to appear at Willesden Youth Court on June 4. A 19-year-old man also arrested after the attack was released on bail pending further inquiries.

Wider Investigations into Antisemitism and Terror

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer affirmed the Government’s commitment to “not relent in our fight against antisemitism and terror.” Since late March, there has been a series of arson attacks, including those targeting Jewish community ambulances in Golders Green, two synagogues, and a former Jewish charity. Another incident involved a drone flown near the Israeli embassy.

Officers from Counter Terrorism Policing London announced on Tuesday the arrest of three men aged 24, 25, and 26 in Harpenden, Hertfordshire, on Sunday. These arrests were made in connection with an alleged plan to commit an arson attack targeting the Jewish community, though the specific target or venue was not disclosed. These men were subsequently released on police bail.

Further arrests include a 25-year-old man in Stevenage on Monday, and a 26-year-old man along with two women aged 50 and 59 arrested in a car in Birmingham. They remain in custody at a London police station. Separately, a 39-year-old man was arrested in Ealing on Tuesday under the Terrorism Act, linked to an investigation into jars of a non-hazardous substance found in Kensington Gardens on April 17. He also remains in custody.

Police Response and Warnings

In total, officers have arrested 23 individuals since the first attack on a place linked to Jewish communities, or those who oppose the Iranian regime. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans, the senior national co-ordinator of Counter Terrorism Policing, stated: “We’ve made very clear that we will be relentless in our pursuit of anyone involved in carrying out or planning these arson attacks.” She added that officers are investigating a “key line of inquiry” into the use of criminal proxies – individuals being paid to execute arson attacks. Evans warned: “While our investigations into this are still ongoing, my message to anyone even considering getting involved in this type of activity is this, the stakes are high and it is absolutely not worth the risk.”

#SynagogueAttack #LondonCrime #Antisemitism #CounterTerrorism #JewishCommunity #ArsonAttack #MetPolice #YouthCrime #CommunitySafety #UKNews

A 17-year-old boy has pleaded guilty to arson not endangering life following an attack on a synagogue in north-west London on Saturday night.
