This incident further intensifies the criticism Israel is currently facing, even from segments of former US President Donald Trump’s political base.

While this event is one among many alleged atrocities attributed to Israel in the region over recent years, it has drawn global condemnation and prompted a direct response from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

In the U.S., where support for Israel, particularly within right-wing circles that often champion Christian values, was once largely unquestioned, the **desecration of this Christian religious symbol** has fueled existing criticism against the Israeli government from some prominent Republicans.

Prominent Voices Speak Out

Right-wing commentator and former Trump ally, Tucker Carlson, remarked, “You would never know it by consuming American corporate media, but this kind of incident is not rare.” He further elaborated in his newsletter on Monday, stating, “The Israeli government has permitted its soldiers to behave like barbarians for decades, all while sucking up generous funding from the United States. The only difference between now and the past is that social media has exposed Israel’s behavior for the world to see.”

Former Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, who has previously diverged from Trump over his hawkish foreign policy, highlighted the substantial financial aid Israel receives. She commented on X in response to the photo, “‘Our greatest ally’ that takes **billions of our tax dollars and weapons every year**.” Another former Republican congressman and Trump ally, Matt Gaetz, simply described the act as “Horrific.”

Independent journalist Glenn Greenwald satirically commented on how Christian Zionists might defend such an act, writing on X: “Christian Zionists: This Israeli soldier was absolutely justified in smashing the head of the Jesus Christ statue because Hezbollah and Hamas were hiding inside. We owe him our gratitude.”

This escalating anger reflects a growing skepticism within Trump’s “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) constituency regarding the close alliance with Israel. Trump is also reportedly under pressure concerning potential involvement in regional conflicts that have impacted global oil prices, with claims that he denied being drawn into a conflict by Netanyahu earlier this week.

Recent public opinion polls indicate that support for Israel in the U.S. is at a historic low. While Israel still largely enjoys unanimous Republican support in Congress, this consensus is beginning to show cracks, with dissent voiced by figures like Carlson, partly due to prolonged conflicts in the Middle East and reported attacks on Christians.

Official Israeli Response

The desecration of the statue, reportedly occurring near the town of Debl in southern Lebanon, elicited an unusually swift reaction from the highest echelons of the Israeli government. Prime Minister Netanyahu issued a statement on Sunday, declaring, “**I condemn the act in the strongest terms. Military authorities are conducting a criminal probe of the matter and will take appropriately harsh disciplinary action against the offender**.”

However, critics note that Israel has a history of rarely holding its soldiers accountable for documented abuses in Gaza, the occupied West Bank, and Lebanon, including instances of sexual violence.

Netanyahu, who has been facing an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) since 2024 over war crimes charges in Gaza, further asserted that Israel treats Christians better than any other country in the region. He claimed, “While Christians are being slaughtered in Syria and Lebanon by Muslims, the Christian population in Israel thrives unlike elsewhere in the Middle East.” He added, “Israel is the only country in the region that the Christian population and standard of living is growing.” It’s worth noting that Lebanon has the largest per capita Christian population in the Middle East, and its president is a Maronite Catholic.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar echoed Netanyahu’s condemnation, stating that the act was “entirely contrary” to Israeli values.

A Pattern of Desecration?

Despite efforts by Israel’s supporters to portray the statue smashing as an isolated error by a single soldier, the incident aligns with a documented pattern of Israeli attacks against places of worship, including churches. In 2024, Israeli troops were filmed staging a mock wedding at a church in Deir Mimas, Lebanon, and vandalizing the building. Last year, an Israeli tank also demolished a statue of Saint George in the southern Lebanese village of Yaroun.

Furthermore, Israel has bombed Palestinian churches multiple times in Gaza since the onset of its conflict in the enclave, including an attack in 2023 that resulted in at least 18 fatalities. Local officials report that Israel has destroyed over 1,000 mosques and three churches in Gaza during the ongoing conflict.

Catholic Leaders Condemn Act

The Assembly of Catholic Ordinaries of the Holy Land issued a strong denunciation of the attack on the statue on Monday. Their statement read, “**This act constitutes a grave affront to the Christian faith and adds to other reported incidents of desecration of Christian symbols by [Israeli] soldiers in southern Lebanon**.” They added, “It further reveals a disturbing failure in moral and human formation, wherein even the most elementary reverence for the sacred and for the dignity of others has been gravely compromised.”

This incident occurs amidst reports of Israeli soldiers continuing to destroy homes and civilian infrastructure in numerous Lebanese villages, allegedly to prevent residents from returning.

Palestinian pastor Munther Isaac, in a social media post on Monday, emphasized a broader perspective: “The outrage shouldn’t be about a destroyed statue of Jesus – abhorrent as that is. The real outrage is the targeting of civilians, the assault on human dignity, the devastation in Gaza and Lebanon. War is evil. We need Accountability.”

Calls for US Intervention

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has called upon Trump and Congress to intervene and halt Israeli violations following the statue’s destruction. CAIR stated, “For years, our government has ignored and enabled persistent Israeli attacks on churches and Christians in Lebanon, Gaza, and elsewhere.” They concluded with a stark message to American public officials: “**If you continue sending more weapons and provide political cover for Israel’s rogue actions, you own what you see in this picture**.”

#JesusStatue #LebanonConflict #IsraelPalestine #ChristianDesecration #MiddleEastNews #USPolitics #ReligiousFreedom #WarCrimes #Gaza #InternationalLaw

A recent photograph depicting an Israeli soldier destroying a statue of Jesus Christ in Lebanon has ignited widespread indignation across the United States.
