Furthermore, several airlines are reducing their flight schedules, potentially leading to significant changes for passengers.

Airlines Reducing Flights to the UK

Many carriers serving the UK market have announced plans to operate fewer flights. These include: KLM, Air Canada, Asiana Airlines, Delta Airlines, Lufthansa, and SAS. Conversely, some companies have stated they do not intend to alter their current schedules: British Airways owner IAG, EasyJet, and Jet2Holidays.

Understanding Flight Price Changes

Beyond flight reductions, some airlines are implementing price increases or introducing new charges for services like luggage. Airlines identified for these changes include: Air France-KLM, Indigo, British Airways-owner IAG, Pakistan International Airlines, Thai Airways, Turkish Airlines-Sun Express, and Virgin Atlantic.

Can Airlines Change Prices or Cancel After Booking?

Rory Boland, travel editor at consumer publication Which?, notes that overall cancellations represent a very small fraction of the millions of flights to and from the UK. Airlines typically target cancellations on routes with multiple daily flights to facilitate rebooking passengers.

While an airline or tour operator can only raise a price post-sale if explicitly stated in their terms and conditions, this is not standard practice, according to independent consumer commentator Jane Hawkes. However, for package holidays, operators can add up to 8% to the cost due to “significant rises in fuel costs,” though most operators are currently promising not to add surcharges this year.

The industry’s jet fuel supply, much of which passes through the Strait of Hormuz, has seen significant disruption. While airlines aren’t currently facing physical fuel shortages, warnings of potential shortages exist if the conflict continues. This supply squeeze has caused jet fuel prices to roughly double between March and mid-April. Airlines’ long-term fuel costs are expected to rise, despite advance deals.

Long-haul routes via Asia have seen the most significant fare increases, with flights from London to Melbourne in June up 76% and to Hong Kong up 72% compared to last year, as reported by Teneo consultancy.

Jane Hawkes advises that there’s no single ‘right’ approach; travelers might wait for last-minute deals or book now, but she doesn’t anticipate price drops this year due to increased airline costs. She recommends flexibility in travel dates and destinations, considering alternatives like road or rail travel, or holidaying within the UK. Additionally, travelers should book comprehensive travel insurance that covers disruption and maintain a “contingency pot” for upfront costs that may be reimbursed later.

Your Rights if Your Flight is Cancelled

If your flight is cancelled, the airline is obligated to either get you to your destination or provide a refund. For delays exceeding a few hours, airlines must offer food and hotel accommodation under normal circumstances. However, in “extraordinary circumstances” such as war, severe weather, or events beyond the airline’s control, they are not required to offer additional compensation. Airlines are currently seeking clarification on whether fuel shortages stemming from the ongoing conflict would qualify as “extraordinary circumstances.”

If you booked accommodation separately, the airline is not responsible for compensating you for missed days. However, for package holidays, if travel is disrupted, your tour operator should extend your stay, offer an alternative holiday, or provide a refund, according to Boland.

Correction: This article has been updated to remove references to Air Asia, Vietjet, and Air New Zealand, as they do not currently operate direct flights to the UK.

#FlightCancellations #AirlineNews #TravelAdvisory #FlightPrices #SummerTravel #ConsumerRights #JetFuel #MiddleEastConflict #UKTravel #HolidayPlanning

Many travelers planning a summer holiday are concerned as flight prices have been rising since the onset of the conflict in the Middle East.
