This movement offers a glimmer of relief following a period of heightened tensions that saw Iran’s blockade of the vital waterway severely disrupt global energy supplies and drive oil prices skyward. The blockade, which commenced with what the original source describes as the “US and Israel’s war on Iran at the end of February,” had impacted approximately 20 percent of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments.

Shipping data from the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) revealed that on Saturday, the Liberia-flagged Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) Serifos, along with the China-flagged VLCCs Cospearl Lake and He Rong Hai, departed the “Hormuz Passage trial anchorage,” a route designed to bypass Iran’s Larak Island. Each of these colossal vessels is capable of transporting up to 2 million barrels of crude oil.

The Serifos, chartered by the Thai state-owned energy firm PTT, was among seven vessels for which Malaysia had sought clearance from Iran to transit the strait, according to sources familiar with the matter speaking to Reuters. This tanker, carrying crude loaded from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in early March, is anticipated to reach Malaysia’s Malacca Port by April 21.

Another vessel, the Ocean Thunder, which was loaded with Iraqi crude and chartered by a unit of Malaysia’s state energy firm Petronas, had already transited the waterway last week. The Cospearl Lake, also carrying Iraqi oil, is projected to arrive at China’s Zhoushan port on May 1. The final discharge location for the Saudi crude aboard the He Rong Hai remains undisclosed. Both Chinese VLCCs are chartered by Unipec, the trading arm of the Chinese energy giant Sinopec.

Despite these movements, hundreds of other tankers are reportedly still awaiting their turn in the Gulf, poised to exit during the ongoing two-week ceasefire period. Furthermore, LSEG data on Sunday indicated that three empty tankers – Mombasa B, Agios Fanourios I, and Shalamar – were sailing into the strait to enter the Gulf and load oil. The Malta-flagged VLCC Agios Fanourios I has signaled its intention to head to Iraq to load Basrah crude destined for Vietnam.

Requests for comment sent outside office hours to Malaysia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, PTT, Petronas, Sinopec, Eastern Mediterranean Maritime (manager for Agios Fanourios I), Cmb.Tech NV (manager for Mombasa B), and Pakistan National Shipping (manager for Shalamar) did not receive immediate responses.

#OilTankers #StraitOfHormuz #USIranCeasefire #GlobalEnergy #OilPrices #ShippingNews #CrudeOil #Geopolitics #EnergySecurity #MaritimeTraffic

Three supertankers, laden with millions of barrels of oil, have successfully navigated the Strait of Hormuz, marking a significant development amidst the delicate ceasefire between the United States and Iran.
