Six months after an internationally mediated agreement aimed at ending the conflict in the Gaza Strip, thousands of families continue to face immense challenges in burying their loved ones. An estimated 10,000 Palestinians remain missing, believed to be trapped under the debris of collapsed buildings since the onset of hostilities in October 2023.<\/p>\n
The United Nations reports that Israeli bombardment has generated over 61 million tonnes of rubble in the besieged territory, leaving entire communities entombed. For many residents, the conflict’s impact remains profound and unresolved.<\/p>\n
Among those affected is Abu Mohammed, a father from Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza. He survived an Israeli attack after being rescued from beneath rubble, but four of his children perished. He has since lived amidst the ruins of his home, where the bodies of his children are still trapped. While he managed to bury his wife, mother, and one child, the others remain inaccessible. “I have been trying for three years to retrieve my children, but these are massive concrete slabs. There is no way I can do this, even with an excavator. This needs heavy equipment,” Abu Mohammed stated, lamenting the lack of assistance from civil defense teams despite repeated calls. His two surviving children are currently receiving medical treatment in Cairo, Egypt, without parental supervision.<\/p>\n
The ceasefire agreement was intended to facilitate the entry of heavy machinery into Gaza for recovery efforts and family reunification. However, Mahmoud Basal, Gaza\u2019s civil defence spokesperson, told Al Jazeera that “Nothing has entered Gaza except the limited equipment brought in for Egyptian committees and Red Crescent\u2019s team to retrieve Israeli captives.” He added, “Once those bodies were recovered, the file was closed.”<\/p>\n
Across Gaza, thousands of bodies are still buried. In one apartment block in Bureij alone, at least 50 bodies reportedly remain trapped under rubble, untouched since October 2023. Conditions on the ground have shown little improvement since the agreement took effect, with families still awaiting the recovery of their dead amidst ongoing Israeli attacks.<\/p>\n
Health and education officials reported that a young female student was shot and killed on Thursday while attending a class in a tent in Beit Lahiya, northern Gaza. Despite the ceasefire, Israeli forces continue to occupy more than half of the Gaza Strip, having leveled most buildings in these areas and displaced residents.<\/p>\n
Since the ceasefire agreement, at least 738 people have been killed and 2,036 wounded, with authorities recovering 759 bodies from the rubble. The broader conflict in Gaza has resulted in the deaths of over 72,317 Palestinians and wounded at least 172,158 others.<\/p>\n
