While UK minesweepers and anti-drone capabilities will continue operating in the region, British naval ships and soldiers will not be deployed to block Iranian ports. Speaking to BBC 5 Live, the prime minister emphasized his focus on reopening the vital shipping channel of the Strait of Hormuz as quickly as possible to reduce energy prices.

The US announced its blockade after negotiations with Iran failed to secure a lasting peace deal to end hostilities in the Middle East. Following a meeting in Islamabad between US and Iranian negotiators, President Donald Trump declared that the US would begin “BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz.” US Central Command (Centcom) later confirmed its forces would enforce the blockade “impartially” on vessels entering and exiting Iranian ports in the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. Centcom clarified that US forces would not impede vessels transiting to and from non-Iranian ports and would provide commercial mariners with a formal notice before the blockade commences.

Sir Keir, recently returned from a visit to the Gulf region, stated he had been working with allies to “keep the Strait open, not shut.” He added, “We’re not supporting the blockade and all of the marshalling diplomatically, politically and capability… that’s all focused, from our point of view, on getting the Strait fully open.” He acknowledged the UK’s mine-sweeping capability but declined to discuss operational matters. Sir Keir has consistently ruled out direct UK military involvement in the conflict, telling the BBC, “My decision has been very clearly that whatever the pressure – and there’s been some considerable pressure – we’re not getting dragged into the war. That’s not in our national interest, because I’m not going to act unless there’s a clear, lawful basis and a clear thought-through plan.”

This week, the UK and France will co-host a summit, which Sir Keir said would “advance work on a coordinated, independent, multinational plan to safeguard international shipping when the conflict ends.” Trump informed Fox News that other countries would participate in blockading the strait, though he did not name them. He also mentioned that NATO offered to help “clean out” the strait, ensuring it would be free for use again “in not too long a distance.” Trump stated the US would deploy minesweepers and that the UK, as a NATO member, would also do so, adding, “I understand the UK and a couple of other countries are sending minesweepers.”

Approximately one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments pass through the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has effectively cut off since US-Israeli strikes began on February 28. Following the blockade announcement, global benchmark Brent crude oil surged above $100 a barrel, up from about $71 before the conflict. The government plans to increase fuel duty in September, though opposition parties have urged the prime minister to cancel the hike. Sir Keir noted the situation was “kept under review,” adding that “a lot will depend on what happens in the next few weeks.”

In a prior call with French President Emmanuel Macron, Sir Keir emphasized “the need to work with a wide coalition of partners to protect freedom of navigation” in the Strait of Hormuz. A UK government spokesperson confirmed, “We are urgently working with France and other partners to put together a wide coalition to protect freedom of navigation.” The spokesperson also stated that ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz “must not be subject to tolling,” following reports that Iran began demanding $2 million (£1.5 million) in transit fees from tankers. While the UK was not involved in the US-Iran talks in Pakistan, Sir Keir warned against “further escalation” in the Middle East after the two sides failed to reach an agreement. Chancellor Rachel Reeves is scheduled to travel to Washington this week for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) meeting to advocate for reopening the Hormuz shipping channel.

#UKPolitics #StraitOfHormuz #IranBlockade #KeirStarmer #USForeignPolicy #MiddleEastConflict #EnergyPrices #InternationalShipping #NATO #Diplomacy

Sir Keir Starmer has stated that the UK will not participate in enforcing the US military blockade of Iran.
