The US will issue a limited number of passports featuring a portrait of US President Donald Trump, the White House has confirmed.
\nFirst reported by Fox News, these passports will be released as part of celebrations for the 250th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence in July.
\nAn administration official confirmed to the BBC that the new designs would be available to “any American citizen” who applies for a passport once the rollout begins, and will continue as long as supplies last.
\nThese passports will only be available at the Washington Passport Agency.
\nA rendering of the passport released by the US State Department shows an image of Trump surrounded by the text of the Declaration of Independence and the American flag, along with the president’s signature in gold.
\n“President Trump’s new patriotic passport design offers yet another great way for Americans to join in the spectacular celebrations for America’s 250th birthday,” a White House spokesperson told the BBC.
\nThey added, “Between the UFC250 Fight, the Great American State Fair, Freedom250 Grand Prix, and this new passport celebrating our freedom, President Trump continues to proudly lead a renewal of national pride and patriotism during our historic semiquincentennial celebration.”
\nCurrent US passports typically depict scenes from the country’s history, such as the Moon landing, and American symbols like the Statue of Liberty.
\nIt is unclear whether US citizens will have the option to opt out of receiving this special edition.
\nThe commemorative passport is the latest effort by the administration to link Trump’s name and image with various government programs and public structures.
\nThe US Mint recently announced plans for a commemorative gold coin featuring Trump as part of the 250th anniversary, and the president is also set to become the first sitting US president to have his signature on US banknotes.
\nThe board of the Kennedy Center voted to rename the performing arts center the “Trump-Kennedy Center” in honor of the president, a move denounced by members of the late President John F. Kennedy’s family.
\nIn early April, the White House unveiled plans for a gold-accented giant victory arch, dubbed the “Arc de Trump.” A federal panel has given preliminary approval for the 250-foot (76m) structure in Washington D.C., despite overwhelmingly negative feedback from the public and preservationist groups.
\nThe president has also left a permanent mark on the White House itself, demolishing the East Wing of the building as part of his plans to construct a ballroom.
\nThe White House has since been sued by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, which alleges that construction began before plans were filed with the National Capital Planning Commission.<\/p>\n
